Why do jet engines not have hemispherical grated coverings to protect against bird strikes? It would be a simple yet profound addition to an otherwise traditional aeronautical design.
Adding grates to the air intake of a jet engine would have two advantages. First, it would save all manner of beings from getting accidentally sucked into the engine, from birds and rabbits, to even human beings, such as negligent flight marshallers on aircraft runways.
Second, it would allow jet powered craft to survive dangerous bird strikes that would otherwise cause damage significant enough to necessitate emergency landings, if not completely uncontrolled downings.
Anyways, this is just my own two cents on a potential technology that would be as simple in its mechanical applications as it would be vital to the preservation of lives.
