Did the Democrats fraudulently win the last election? That has been the accusation leveled from the more creative Republicans. They have no proof, but then again, they don't really need any either.
My own feelings on this subject are the same as when Democrats made similar accusations in the fall of 2016: that whether one's opponent cheated electorally or not in the end does not matter.
Why do I feel this way? Because history has proven that all is fair in love and politics. The problem is not that one's adversary cheated, but that you expected them to play fair in the first place. And such naive thinking leaves one ill prepared for the challenges that await the Commander in Chief.
When you think about it, this approach makes perfect sense. As President, you will be at odds with the Russians, the Chinese, the Iranians, and the North Koreans. None of their leaders will play fair. All of them will cheat as a matter of public policy. And if you cannot beat a cheater in an American election, you will not be able to adequately represent or defend America either.
So I would encourage both Democrats and Republicans to throw out whatever rule books they have been relying upon. Because the unspoken gentlemanly agreements you expect your adversaries to adhere to will in all likelihood only serve to undermine your competitiveness after all has been said and done.
