People in my life keep mentioning in passing that they've been watching a relatively new series called "How to Get Away with Murder". I rarely watch television myself, because it doesn't have nearly as diverse or interesting content as does the internet, and because it hardly ever teaches me anything I didn't already know. And this particular show is an excellent example of the latter reason. Every time someone subtly communicates to me that they "want to get away with murder", my response is always the same: "Just join the military. That, or the police force." Not only will you get away with cold-blooded killing if you want to, but you'll also get rewarded for doing so. Of course, there's also the risk of dying gruesomely in combat, but living in a society as lawless as is America's, that should be something one is used to by now.
Whenever I tell people this, they pretend that I'm joking, and offer a chuckle in response. The truth is that I often wish I had a sense of humor, but unfortunately, I do not. And this, like most of my musings, is no laughing matter. Whether positions of power over others attract corrupt sociopaths, or whether they shape otherwise innocent beings into them (or both), the result is still the same: earthly power correlating with an irresponsible lack of accountability. And it's a match made in hell, both for the power-hungry individual, and for anyone who finds themselves caught in their clutches.
However, I tend to think that people are usually trying to ask a very different question when they ponder over "how to get away with murder". What they really mean to ask is: "How can I escape Divine Retribution for murder?" And my response to that question is: it's not possible. The forces that reign supreme in this Universe do everything in their power to talk each and every one of us out of whatever vile intentions our hearts are fixated upon. Kindness is its own reward, and malice its own punishment, but when those lessons fail to teach us, the personally horrific consequences of our actions will always be there, called upon us by our own distressed inner conscience, as a lesson not to us, but to anyone who would follow in our footsteps. And if you are searching for a way to cheat these fundamental laws of life, and to circumvent divine justice, your wearying search will last you for an eternity.
