Ride Of The Valkyries

Chromomorphic materials may soon have applicability in the design of stealth aircraft.

To begin with, there are currently two stealth craft designs. The first is for day-time warplanes, such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the F-22 Raptor, while the other is for night-time craft, such as the RAH-66 Comanche and the F-117 Nighthawk. The former are light-colored, while the latter are painted black.

But what if a coating material were applied, the color of which could be controlled? Rather than having to recoat aircraft for different strike missions, or rely upon two completely different designs, they could instead all be ready for use at a moment's notice.

Of course, this remains for now within the realm of science fiction. Despite the best attempts of material science, no such coating has been invented that is both affordable and effective. But that will not keep people such as I from dreaming, or from envisioning what such a solution would mean for this world.
